"Rounders,"
starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton & John Malkovich (1998)
"Rounders" is still one of my favorite poker movies, if not one of my favorite movies, period.
It centres on a short time in the life of Mike McDermott (Matt Damon), an ex poker ace turned law student. His old pal Lester "The Worm" Murphy (Edward Norton) has just gotten out of jail and is, like usual, looking for an angle. He wants him and Mike to get back to their old ways of hustling poker against frat boys and other fish, and though he fights it at first eventually Lester is able to convince Mike to come back to his old ways.
But eventually Lester shows his true colors by using Mike's name as collateral, and after racking up a huge debt to Russian mobster Teddy KGB (John Malkovich) Mike has to re-join the ranks of the poker circuit to win back the money - and his good name.
