"Maverick," starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster & James Garner (1994)

"Maverick" was such a fun movie! It didn't try so hard to take itself so seriously like all the other poker movies out there, it just had fun. Based on a television show from the 1950s that starred James Garner as the original Bret Maverick (played by Mel Gibson in the movie), it is about Bret Maverick, a world class stud poker player, womanizer, and all-around wise-guy having to make some fast money. He needs three thousand dollars to make up the $25,000 needed for a buy in to Winner Take All 5-Card Stud Poker tournament on a riverboat, and he runs into all sorts of interesting characters and comedy mishaps along the way. These include James Garner as the sheriff Zane Cooper, and Jodie Foster as a poker player and con-woman who is even able to fool Maverick.
